What to do With Your Empties

IMG_1041

Usually posts about empties are about whether or not we want to re-purchase products. But this “empties” post is a little bit different. I am here to explore what to do with your empties. The actual empty container. I’m heading to grad school soon and will be very poor and in preparation I’ve been exploring how I can use my empties.

Overall

You can use smaller empties for the same kind of products. If you have a gym bag or locker or cosmetics bag you can use smaller empties to store products in. In some cases you can use an empty for a totally different product. This may have ben a confusing explanation. Look below, hopefully it will make sense.

Empty: Big Lotion Bottles

New Use: Use it as a pump shampoo bottle

I’ve filled this empty lotion bottle with shampoo and now I’ve got a shampoo bottle with a pump in the shower! I really like it! Pumping out the shampoo is so much easier and its easier to control how much shampoo comes out

IMG_1045

Empties: Smaller spray bottles (from sample hair products)

New Use: Put spray toners and hair products into empties

The original spray bottles for toners and hair products from Lush can be a little big to put in my purse and I hate lugging it to the gym and back everyday. SO, I use smaller spray empties to have a smaller amount in the gym or my bag.

Empties: Smaller hair serum pump and small facial gel pump

New Use: Put hair oils in smaller empties

I have a lot of empties with a pump designed for hair or facial serums. I’ve been putting my hair treatment oil into the smaller facial oil pump and taking it to the gym and putting it in my purse for oil treatment during the day. I really like it! The pump empties are hard to re-purpose for almost anything besides hair oils or serums.

Empty: small toner bottle

New Use: Put toners from larger bottles or spray bottles into empty

Sometimes larger toner bottles are difficult to use properly, it can be difficult to make sure the right amount comes out. And, sometimes toners come in spray bottles but I actually prefer to apply toner with a cotton ball rather than spray on. So I use smaller toner bottles for toner that comes in a spray bottle or that is in a container that’s too large to use properly

Empties: Small to medium lotion containers

New Uses: Great for traveling or aspirin

I travel a lot and sometimes its really hard to cart around huge containers of lotion. So I will put lotion in smaller containers (Lush products are really great for that!!) I use smaller lotion containers (i.e. eye cream containers, lotion sample containers) for Advil in my purse. Super convenient!!

30 Day Minimalist Challenge

If you’ve read my blog before, you might have seen me mention that I like to think I’m a minimalist. I’m NOT a minimalist. I’m an ASPIRING minimalist. I really believe that having fewer possessions, obligations, and responsibilities makes one happier and healthier.

Here are some of the ways I try to practice minimalism in my daily life:

  • I don’t buy books, I only get library books through my kindle
  • I try not to buy things I want, I TRY to focus on things I need (I don’t always succeed at this one)
  • If I buy new clothes, I always make sure to donate as many items as I buy
  • I try to have one of things rather than many (i.e. I only have one water bottle, if I lose it I’ll buy another one. But until I lose it, I’m not getting another one)

BUT I recently found this really cool 30 Day Minimalist challenge at Into Mind, this awesome minimalist blog I’ve been reading recently.

I’m doing it! Tomorrow I am starting 30 days of minimalism!!! I’m doing it!!!

If you’re into minimalist challenges here are a couple more that I think look cool:

Some Things I Currently Like

IMG_1029

I haven’t been very good about blogging lately. In fact, I’ve been pretty lazy. But here’s to getting back on the horse. Here are a couple of products and items I’m totally into right now.

Dream Journal

IMG_1030

I dream a lot. And sometimes I have weird dreams. My friends certainly don’t want to hear about my dreams, so I’ve been writing them down. It helps me relax in the morning and start my day. I really recommend.

Cynthia Rowley Brightening Illuminator

IMG_1032

I pretty much love all the products from Cynthia Rowley, but I’ve been loving this one especially. This is a great illuminator because it isn’t just plain shine, it also has a tiny bit of pink in it. It looks beautiful on the skin and I think its great for anyone just getting into highlighters or who is a little unsure about highlighters. You really can’t go wrong with this product (just don’t eat it).

Azul Signature Clear Skin Gel

IMG_1031

My skin has been freaking out a little bit lately. Some stress from school and the changing weather has been causing me to break out. I love this gel as both a preventative measure and a way to treat current breakouts. I really recommend to anyone with bothersome acne.

Beauty Protector Protect and Detangle Leave in Conditioner

IMG_1035

I really like this brand! I have really liked their leave in oil treatments before and this product is no different. It makes my hair smell great and gives it a little moisture without weighing it down. LOVE IT. GET IT.

Organic Coconut Oil

IMG_1033

I’ve been using this to take my makeup off recently. I just put a little on my face or on a cotton ball and then take the day’s makeup off. Its great! It really takes all my makeup off and it makes my skin look amazing. I think it is especially great for anyone with dry skin.

Its the Little Things

I got a pretty awesome haul recently. Its made up of a bunch of totally random things but I’m in love with all of them.

Origins GinZing Moisture

IMG_1007

This product has been getting SO much love on the blog scene for what feels like years. I’ve really wanted to try it for the longest time. And I am so happy I did get to try it! Its wonderful!! My skin looks, feels AND smells great. I love orangey scent! I wouldn’t recommend it for people with very dry skin, but as we are transitioning out of winter it feels like the perfect moisturizer.

Biore Deep Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar

IMG_1010

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. I have also wanted this product for the longest time but I haven’t been able to find in a store for the longest time. I’ve noticed a serious change in my skin since I’ve starting using this product. I really think that my skin is clearer and brighter since using this product. I haven’t ever really used a facial bar in the past, but I’m so glad I’m using it now.

Azul Green Tea Toner

IMG_1008

I got this toner from a cosmetic company my friend recently recommended to me. I’ve never used any of their products before, but I think I’m hooked now. This toner is phenomenal! I don’t know what they put in this stuff, but it really smells like green tea and it does a great job of clarifying my skin without drying it out. I really recommend this product for pretty much any skin type. GET IT!\

Smashbox Lipstick Trio Set

IMG_1009

This set is no longer available through the smashbox website but I recently saw it at Nordstrom Rack and I bet it might still be around if you look. I love this colors! This set was only $20 and I got three colors that will last for some time! I recommend for any lipstick junkie or anyone interested in trying out smashbox cosmetics.

What’s In My Bag?

I just got a new bag from Kate Spade Saturday. The brand just closed recently and they had a huge blowout sale. I bought a great leather purse for almost half off. I’m so excited about my new bag I had to do a classic “what’s in my bag” post.

What’s In My Bag?

Nivea Mint and Minerals Refreshing Lip Care

I’ve been totally digging this…chapstick. Its seems unfair to call it chapstick because I love how it smells and feels on my lips. There’s no color in it which I actually love because I can put it on over my lipstick.

Smashbox’s Primrose Mini Lipstick

I’ve never been able to try any smashbox cosmetic products until now and I have to say I’m totally satisfied with it! This color is beautiful and I love this lipstick formula. It applies really easily and has a pretty long-lasting stay power. It also look good even if I put a little Nivea chapstick over it

Kate Spade pen

Sometimes I think we should pamper ourselves. I got this pen for my birthday last year and I love it! I think you owe it to yourself to get a nice pen. DO IT! They don’t make this pen anymore, but I recommend pretty much any Kate Spade product.

Lush’s Eau Roma Water Toner Water

I don’t love this product as a toner, but I really like it as a refreshing spray throughout the day. If I have a really long day I like to spritz a little bit of this at about 3 or 4pm. Its also great if you’re starting to feel a little tired–the great smell and feel wakes you right up!

Marc Jacobs Daisy Rollerball

I LOVE this scent. It works really well as both a daytime and nighttime scent. I also think the rollerball if a great product to have in your bag because you can easily re-apply throughout the day if you want to. This is a great scent and I think its particularly good if you’re looking for a feminine, but not too flirty scent.

Other Necessities

Kindle

I love reading and you never know when you’ll get a chance to read a little bit.

Planner

If I don’t write it down, it doesn’t exist. It doesn’t matter how many times you tell me we’re going to dinner–I HAVE to write it down or it does not happen.

Notebook

You never know when someone’s going to give you a great book or movie recommendation. Or give you directions to the new restaurant in town. Always have a notebook, always.

Book Reviews #5

I’ve been very sick lately so I haven’t done much blogging and I’ve been doing a lot of reading–which is always fun. Here’s what I’ve been reading, some of it is good and some of it is fucking terrible.

1. The Magician’s Land by Lev Grossman

This is the third and final book in the Magicians series by Lev Grossman. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it is some of the best reading I have done in the past year. I really enjoyed reading the first two books in the series and this book is no different. It is intellectual, funny, AND dark all at the same time. If you’ve got a little angst or are interested in a good read I really recommend reading this series. DO IT!

Rating: 4/5

2. The Vanishers by Heidi Julavits

This is easily one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Seriously terrible. I finish this book only so that my criticism of it could be complete. It starts with a cool premise, a young woman at a psychic college is psychically “attacked” by her world famous mentor. The premise is great, but the plot, dialogue, and character development is painfully bad. This book has gotten fairly good reviews which I find absolutely astounding because I think its terrible. Julavits attempts deep themes and meaningful symbols, but fails to create anything noteworthy in this book. Don’t read it.

Rating: 1/5

3. White Oleander by Janet Fitch

This book tells the very difficult journey of one young woman to overcome her mother’s influence, foster care, and crushing loneliness. I was really interested in this book, Oprah loves it and I’ve read tons of great reviews about it. The book gives a great insight into the failings of the foster care system and how difficult it can be to be a young child alone in the world. Despite these benefits, the main character’s struggles and difficulties are so extreme they actually become comical. It almost seems like the author is trying to make you cry without any regard for good literature. I’m not a huge fan. BUT, if you are interested in learning about how shitty the foster care system is I really recommend this book. I found this book to be so sad and depressing that it actually influenced my mood negatively even when I wasn’t reading it.
